The Next Right Step...
Taking the next right step!

Last weekend I had the opportunity to participate in a HYROX event. I had previously done this event with a partner about a year and a half ago. While I certainly had fun with my partner, I suffered from excruciating pain from an old hamstring injury with all the running involved. I decided this go around I was really going to put in the time and effort to not only be able to finish the race but run the entire thing without pain.

This meant many months of not only running much more than I have in recent years but a lot of mobility and activation work. I needed to set set myself up to not reinjure that area or anywhere else.
Early in that process I would look off into the distance while I was running and become instantly overwhelmed with how far I still had to go. I realized pretty quickly if I just keep my gaze to the next 10-20 meters I was able to settle into the run and before I knew it I had reached my destination.
I often thought while having that experience that life is much the same. When I climbed my way out of massive amounts of debt, if I had obsessed over that bottom line number there was a good chance I was going to get discouraged. If I just looked at the next chunk I was able to pay, I felt like I had could create some momentum.
It’s easy to get discouraged when we are working towards our goals and we keep looking off in the distance and see how far we still have to go. Sometimes it helps to keep our eyes on the next step instead of off in the distance. That could mean the next 3lbs on the scale, the next street corner on a run or the next bottle of water that you need to drink. Sometimes you should only focus on the next right step!
