Sweating ≠ Effective

Smart Workouts!

“It’s not hard work that pays off, it’s smart work that does.”

~Unknown

For many years, if I wasn’t half dead and covered in sweat, I didn’t work out. That mindset led to a lot of injuries and an unrealistic and unsustainable approach to exercise. As I grew in my understanding of exercise science and body mechanics, that type of mentality got thrown out the window.

I still love a tough workout (I really am a glutton for punishment) but I am far more interested in listening to my body and giving it what it needs.

Last Friday I had some high-intensity conditioning in my programming. My body was tired, sore, and felt pretty cranky. I decided to change things up and work through some mobility and activation work and finish with a light 10 minutes of cardio. I am not sure my heart rate got above 100 and I am certain didn’t break a sweat but I felt fantastic when I was done. I got some movement in and worked through some of the stiffness I was feeling.

If you are struggling with a chronic injury, I can promise you it is worth your time to slow things down and figure out what you body needs. That may mean changing your workouts. It may also mean doing things you are not familiar with.

Take a step back this week and work smarter, not harder in the gym. Your body will thank you!
