Routine Is Key. But So Is Play

Why Consistency and Variety Matter in Your Training

If you follow anyone in the fitness world, you'll notice a common thread: they tend to repeat the same core movements, with slight variations. I squat every Monday and Thursday. I bench press every Tuesday. And I’ve done more push-ups, pull-ups, lunges, and planks than I can count.

That’s because these foundational movements matter. They build strength, reinforce good mechanics, and support longevity in the body and mind. Training consistency isn’t just helpful — it’s essential.

But that’s only part of the story.

Equally important is stepping outside your comfort zone. That’s one reason I work with a coach — even though I’m a coach myself. I intentionally seek out movements that challenge my proprioception, balance, mobility, and mental agility. I make time for the unfamiliar.

That’s why Fridays have become my "play day." I bring out the ladder, BOSU, jump rope, and sled. I move in ways that demand coordination, quick thinking, and a fresh neurological response. It’s not just about moving the body — it’s about waking up the brain.

A well-rounded training program should absolutely include the fundamentals: pushing, pulling, hinging, squatting variations, and loaded carries. These translate directly into everyday life — from lifting groceries to picking up your child, or simply getting out of a chair with ease.

But you also need novelty. You need movement that surprises your system, gets your brain engaged, and keeps training exciting. That’s how we stay young — physically and mentally.

To those already training with me: thanks for embracing the chaos — there’s always a method behind the madness. If you’re struggling to keep things fresh in your routine, let’s talk. There’s a whole world of movement waiting for you.
