“Rest is not a matter of doing absolutely nothing. Rest is repair.”
~Daniel W Josselyn
Let’s talk about rest—the most underrated wellness tool of all time.
Somewhere along the way, we learned that being busy equals being successful, and resting means you’ve “fallen behind.” But from a health and wellness perspective, rest isn’t quitting. It’s refueling. And without it, even the best intentions (and green smoothies) can only take you so far.
When you rest, your body gets to do its behind-the-scenes magic. Muscles repair. Hormones rebalance. Stress levels drop. Your immune system gets stronger. In other words, rest is when your body clocks in for the night shift and actually gets work done.
Your brain loves rest just as much. Constant go-go-go mode keeps your nervous system stuck on high alert, which can lead to overwhelm, foggy thinking, irritability, and burnout. Rest gives your mind a chance to exhale, reset, and remember how to function without caffeine-fueled determination.
And let’s clear something up: rest doesn’t always mean lying still in a dark room (though sometimes that’s exactly what’s needed). Rest can look like better sleep, a quiet walk, stretching, laughing, daydreaming, spending time in nature, or even doing something creative just because it feels good. Real rest restores you—it doesn’t drain you.
From a wellness standpoint, rest is an act of self-awareness and self-respect. It’s listening when your body whispers instead of waiting for it to shout through exhaustion, illness, or injury. When you’re well-rested, everything works better—your energy, your mood, your focus, and yes, your productivity too.
So this week, try reframing rest as part of your wellness routine, not a reward you have to earn. Ask yourself: What would actually help me feel more restored right now? Then give yourself permission to do that—without guilt.
Because taking care of yourself doesn’t start with doing more.
Sometimes, it starts with doing less—and resting better.
Enjoy some rest during the next couple of days before the New Year begins!
