“When you simply can’t try any harder, it’s time to find a different path.”

~Greg McKeown ‘Effortless’

Have you ever tried to fix something or figure it out, only to make it more complicated than necessary? I know I have!

Over the past couple of years, I've improved in this area, but I used to get worked up over things that didn't deserve all that energy.

For a long time, I avoided going to events downtown because I had created a complicated narrative about parking. I would envision an anxiety-filled journey, convinced it would be a headache, and I often talked myself out of it. Then, a couple of years ago, I decided to give the Alley a try because I heard about a play I really wanted to see.

Guess what? Parking was possibly the easiest part of the entire experience! I was in and out of the parking garage in just minutes. The elaborate story I had told myself was far more challenging and painful than the actual experience.

I think we often do this with our goals as well. Maybe you want to run a 5K, but you’re overwhelmed by the thought of all the training and time it will take. You've talked yourself out of it before you even opened the front door. What if, instead, you simply went outside and walked for 10 minutes? Then, tomorrow, you could do the same thing.

There are certainly challenges in life that require serious attention, but many things just need us to take that first step and give them a try. If you need help with that first step, just reply to this email!
