Just Move!

Just Move!

“It is my professional opinion as a biomechanist that movement is what most humans are missing more than any other factors, and the bulk of the scientific community has dropped the ball.”

~Katy Bowman, Author of Move Your DNA

I am currently reading a book called Built from Broken by Scott Hogan (I would highly recommend it) and I came across a startling fact…

“You could stretch for 20 minutes daily, and it would still only account for 1.4% of the day. When you consider that most people sit for 11-12 hours each day, it’s not hard to see why stretching-and even exercise-falls short when it comes to correcting the problems our modern lifestyles have created.”

The fact of the mater is that we sit far too much on a daily basis and it is breaking down our bodies. I am not a doctor but I would venture to suggest that if we moved more we would feel better.

I understand that sometimes our jobs/careers require that we hunker down at our desk and get some stuff done but I would bet we are still not maximizing the times and/or opportunities we do have to move.

If I find that I need to be at my desk for an extended period of time I will do some neck rolls, roll my feet on a lacross ball, hip hinges in a seated position, or take a short :30sec walk around my area. These are not big movements but they don’t have to be do keep things fluid and moving. If TV is your thing, commit to moving during one of the commercials each time they come on.

I know sometimes out of sight out of mind and I get it. Try setting an alarm on your phone at the top of every hour. When the alarm goes off stand-up and do some overhead reaches, standing in place high knees or just some body twists. Really anything to create more blood flow in your body and keep away the stiffness that comes with sitting for extended periods of time.

Experiment this week by committing to moving every hour, even if its only for 10-15 seconds and see how you feel at the end of the week.
