Is it tight or is it weak?

The chicken or egg paradox!

Weak muscles can become tight muscles.

Tight muscles can become painful muscles.

The body is a fantastic machine. It will do what ever it needs to do to survive. When someone has a stroke, the brain has the capability of rewiring what parts operate what functions so that person still has the ability to function.

What this also means is if a part of your body is weak it will do what ever is necessary to ensure the safety of the body as a whole and compensate for that weakness. If you have chronically tight ankles there is a good chance you need to strengthen your feet muscles as they are likely weak and causing your ankles to stiffen to make sure that you can still walk.

When I tore my hamstring, I realized pretty quickly I was quad dominate. I had not given enough time or attention to my hamstrings or glutes keeping them weak enough to eventually tear under substantial load.

If you find you have a chronically tight area of your body, check in with the surrounding areas to evaluate whether there is some weakness going on that your body is trying to protect. Weak/tight muscles often lead to broken or painful muscles. Don’t wait until that happens. If you are unsure of what might be weak or needing some extra activation or attention let me know. Often just some small additional movements before or after you workout can help start to strengthen certain areas.
