‘Proximal stiffness enhances distal athleticism.”
~Stuart McGill
I am very deep in a few continuing education courses and was reminded of the above quote in some of my reading. The idea is that when the core (proximal part of the body) is stable, strong, and “stiff,” our distal (think limbs) part of the body can operate with better mobility, movement, and athleticism.
For many years a strong core meant 6-pack abs. Thankfully we have evolved from that way of thinking and now look at our core system very differently. If we think of it as the proximal part of our body it includes our T-spine, through our lumbar spine into our pelvic floor. This system requires a very different approach to strength than some sit-ups.
Part of making a strong core system is being able to activate those muscles which can be difficult if you are not familiar with how they feel or operate. This weeks Movement Motivation includes two different core exercises that give you the opportunity to feel your core system work and then engage for healthy activation.
If you are struggling with nagging pains and limitations with the distal parts of your body experiment with giving a fair amount of attention to the proximal part of your body. Don’t know if you are engaging the right area or muscles reach out to me! Let’s get you stable in the right areas so the other areas can move more freely.
