Finding Rest

“Rest isn’t a reward for work, it’s part of the work.”

~Leesa Hall

Many of you know I was afforded the opportunity to take a vacation this past weekend. I seem to always forget how important they are and why I need to incorporate more of them in my life.

I got up the morning of my departure at 3am to make sure I was able to get my workout in before I had to fly out. So I expected I was going to be tired when I finally did get there and got settled. I decided not to set my alarm that following morning, figuring I would likely get up at a reasonable time. To my surprise, I slept for 15 straight hours. I can’t remember ever sleeping that many hours in my life.

When I started reflecting on why I slept for 15 hours I realized I have been pushing hard for a long time and I almost never slow down. As a classic type-A overachiever this kind of behavior is considered normal but as I grow in my life journey, I am finding more value in finding moments of rest. I think I will always lean towards overworking but I want to be more intentional about making time for rest.

Are you finding time for rest in your life? It doesn’t always have to be a vacation, it can be as simple as sitting at a coffee shop and reading a book. Learning to make rest part of your routine is just as important as time for work. Both are what usher you into the next phase of your life.
