Easy Habits

Do the easy stuff!

“First forget inspiration. Habit is more dependable. Habit will sustain you whether you’re inspired or not.”

~Octavia Butler

I have been doing this health and fitness thing for a minute. It started back in 2005 when I lost 75lbs. It has evolved and matured a lot since then. I have had really motivating seasons and seasons where I did what I needed to sustain and nothing more.

What I learned really early on is not to rely on “inspiration.” Sure, it had its moments and it would occasionally spark something in me but what has sustained me all these years are my habits. They have become second nature to me so I don’t think about them too much.

Some of those habits include…

  1. Working out 5+ days a week. It’s just a part of my day. There have been times where I was training multiple hours a day for an up coming competition or just popping on the trail for an easy 2 mile walk. Either way, I just did it and didn’t argue with myself about doing it.

  2. I stretch 5 minutes a day. There are days where I get way more. There are days I struggle to get those 5 minutes in but I just know I need to get in those minutes to keep my body feeling ok.

  3. Having healthy food options available. There are times where I have done extensive meal prepping. Other times I got most of my meals from Myfit or some healthy frozen meals from the store. However I made sure there was always something at home that I could grab because I knew if I didn’t I would be fending for myself in the wild west of fast food.

These are really the only 3 habits I have exclusively maintained all these years and they have served me well and kept me always moving in the right direction even when motivation was lacking.

When people come to me wanting to lose weight, get fit, or look a certain way, they go head strong into trying to do a million things. How about starting off with a few simple habits. Build off of those and then create some more if necessary. What people find out pretty quickly is if they commit to a few habits with consistency and diligence the rest figures itself out.

What habits could you start this weekend that could start getting you closer to your goals? What small change could you spend a little more time focusing on that would result in some long-term gains?
